Meet the Team

Founder/Executive Director, Andrew Neville

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Andrew Neville experienced the fullest breadth of life growing up in New York City. From his earliest steps, he built bridges to the people and places that compose its many communities. This trust and faith in his neighbors and friends matured into the strongly held belief that restorative care resides within these communities and their community leaders. It is this belief that now guides his vision for staging interventions and shaping services.

Andrew began his career while attending the University of Chicago, as a Classroom Assistant in their community outreach program called the Neighborhood Schools Program. This experience deeply marked Andrew and lit the flame of his passion for education. Upon graduation, Andrew was accepted into the New York City Teaching Fellows program. Here he was exposed to leading edge educational theory and began building the foundations for his vision of a better New York. The tragic loss of Andrew’s father in 2009 was a turning point in his career. He started boxing with a family friend and USA Boxing coach to cope with the loss and unintentionally brought his passion with him into the gym. Subsequent positions as an educator and administrator at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn, an institution with a reputation for student-centric and creative pedagogy, further fanned the flames of Andrew’s burgeoning interest in care.

Though Andrew’s prospects were limited as a boxer, Andrew saw boxing as a nearly limitless system for staging interventions. He creatively applied his professional experience to his evenings in the gym and gradually realized the shape of a program. That concept fused traditional classroom instruction, evidence-based solutions, behavioral health and boxing as the vehicle for success. He recast the gym as a safe space and the coaches as community leaders. He envisioned a map of New York City where boxing gyms were pivot points for Justice Reform and Alternative services.

Now a Social Justice entrepreneur, Andrew founded and launched Beyond Boxing INC (BB here after) in 2019. From the “corner”, he guides BB as its Director. And in the “ring”, he leads a team of coaches as they deliver Social Emotional instruction and tailored boxing training to justice involved and impacted young adults.

Aside from his work with BB, Andrew is a frequent guest speaker and consultant for any number of events and ideas. These range from sports as intervention to community-based care to reimagining community resources. When not engaged professionally, Andrew can be found plying his favorite sport, in his local gym.
